S3 Portal - A Tissue Specimen Collection System Case Study

Simplifying specimen requests for scientists, donors, and system admins.

Johnson & Johnson is an American corporation, which engages in the research and development, manufacture, and sale of products in the healthcare industry. J&J operates through the following segments: Consumer, Pharmaceutical, and Medical Devices. The pharmaceutical segment (Janssen Biotech) focuses on therapeutic areas such as immunology, infectious diseases, vaccines, etc.

Despite being the second-largest healthcare company in the world (according to Forbes). At Janssen Biotech, the company’s specimen collection system still relied on manual data entry.

In early 2022, the company decided to transform the specimen collection system into a digital experience that would reduce the burden and complexity for the scientists, donors, and program leaders.

What are we going to build?

The S3 Portal will facilitate access to the Janssen Donor Program by creating automation and reducing the burden and complexity for all involved. S3 will be a responsive web-based system designed for three user types: scientists aka requestors, donors, and the portal’s admins. Each user type will have its own portal view to manage and complete tasks within its context:

The scientist’s portal will help scientists send tissue specimen requests to the admins for research and experiments.

The admin’s portal will help admins manage incoming requests, recruit donors and make appointments, edit portal settings, etc.

The donor’s job board will help J&J donors pick the sample requests they are willing to donate, manage upcoming appointments, donation history, etc.

Phase 1 Requirements:

  • Reduce the time and efforts required by donor program leaders to find donors with sample requests
  • Simplify the request process by minimizing the inputs for requestors (auto-populate name, World Wide ID, department and department number, date, timestamp)
  • Logic built-in form: correct format (numeric, text, email)
  • Manage donors and their sample types, upcoming appointments, and donation history.
  • Settings to manage lab hours, appointment durations, sample types, and admin permissions.
  • Notification management via SMS/Email between parties
  • Increase compliance and maintain donor privacy with anonymous Donor IDs
  • For security, use Single Sign-On (SSO) with PingID authentication. The portal is only accessible under the J&J network.
